How I Paid Only $808 for My World Cup 26 Quarterfinals Ticket (11 Rows Behind The Goal!) To See Messi and Argentina VS Switzerland!!

When I had decided to go to Vancouver, I told myself that would be the only World Cup match that I would attend (famous last words!) At that time, I opted for the whole experience (Fan Festival and other happenings in the host cities) over paying for the match as I could not bring myself to spend $1000 on a group stage match!

This is one of those “once in a lifetime” moments, lol not attending the World Cup but seeing Lionel Messi play for Argentina and at the World Cup and this would be my last opportunity to do that. He is simply the GOAT but even more so, he has been having one of the craziest tournaments and I wanted to be able to see/be a part of that magic in person!

Luckily La Albiceleste pulled off two wins against Cabo Verde and Eygpt as I sat and wavered and another opportunity presented itself: Argentina vs Switzerland Quarterfinal Match!

How I Went About Searching For Tickets

The biggest reason why I didn’t end up at the Round of 16 match in Atlanta was that FIFA made me so mad with their ticket drops. They are such a corrupt organization!

First photo on the left is from their official ticket last minute website the night before the match – how can they claim that 1: matches are sold out when there are literally hundreds if not thousands of tickets that they still have (photo #2 was representative of most of the sections with the number of available seats!)? And 2: claim for dynamic pricing would mean that prices would drop if the demand wasn’t there but FIFA did not adjust prices (as seen in the photo #3!)

Prices on resale sites were much more attractive that FIFA’s own resale website PLUS FIFA would be taking a 30% overall cut – 15% from BOTH seller and buyer so I would not be using that!

So FIFA Websites Are Out, Where To Buy Then?

I don’t love the idea of using a reseller site but also at this point, it was what would be the cheapest way for me to get to see Messi.

I didn’t take screenshots from the matches I looked at so here’s what tickets are today (July 15, 2026) as the World Cup Final is now set between Spain and Argentina to showcase just how dramatically prices can differ from the resale websites!

Yes I am aware of how suspicious it is that the same tickets are on multiple re-sale sites (but interestingly not on Ticketmaster?) but is useful in this case to show some interesting patterns that I saw time and time again with Viagogo being the most competitively priced.

What Was My Strategy?

I had heard the horror stories about using Stubhub not only for World Cup tickets but also other popular events so I was prepared for that risk in using a reseller. I was willing to chance not being able to get in but wasn’t too worried that I would not get my money back if that was the case as I was using my Chase Sapphire Reserve. Chase has been amazing about helping with disputes in the rare circumstances I ever need to do one!

I had done my research by obsessively checking tickets for this match as well as others to get a feeling on pricing as well as timing (ie needing to know that tickets would no longer show on Viagogo or Stubhub 4 hours before the start of the match!) Also understanding football as well as teams helped a lot with my strategy (for example, if it had been Colombia and not Switzerland that advanced, the ticket prices would not have dropped and likely would have went up as the match got closer)

I kept watching and watching and seeing prices drop and the number of seats were not going down very quickly. Since demand wasn’t too robust, I was comfortable taking a gamble and waiting until match day and as close to four hours before as possible.

So I knew that I could wait this one out until I saw an especially attractive seat at a great price. I was aiming to sit in the first 20 rows (while knowing I was going only for 100 sections) and would prefer behind the goal or mid-field.

Not All Smooth Sailing AKA What Could Have Been A Nightmare Scenario!

A PERFECT seat opens up and it’s $993 – perfect I quickly book and get a confirmation email!

But then minutes later, I get a CANCELLATION email?! I checked my account and I saw the charge was pending so I was completely confused!

As I am on hold with Chase to make sure that there wasn’t something holding it up on the back end, I notice that the seller had RELISTED the ticket and for over a THOUSAND more!

I am not sure how that is legal?!

But I Soldiered On and SUCCESS? Maybe?

There was about ten minutes before tickets would stop being sold on Viagogo and another ticket popped up that was exactly what I was looking for but I was worried as it was the same price as the other ticket.

I received an email from FIFA about 10 minutes after purchase to accept the ticket so at that time, I know it’s legitimate. Hilariously when I accept the ticket and see it in my FIFA ticket app, I realize that it’s an Argentinian supporter ticket and that I will be in that section behind the goal!

Beautiful Tips: Use Apple Pay – helps with time-sensitive purchases and seems to help with mitigating fraud concerns from card issuers and merchants. ALSO USE different emails for different accounts or at least not your full name Gmail address when buying tickets since your email (and hence name/info) is shared with others!

How Did I Save Even More Money?

One of the advantages for buying my ticket via Viagogo (or Stubhub) is that by using my Chase Sapphire Reserve to pay, that charge triggered the second $150 credit benefit on the card. This is a direct savings of $150!

I always preach about maximizing spend and will use shopping portals for more points/miles whenever possible. Viagogo was 3.5% Cashback (or in my case, I earn Amex points for 3.5x) on Rakuten so that was another $34.75 saved bring the total saved to $184.75!

Most Importantly, Was The Seat As Advertised AND Worth The Effort?

While I do concede that is a fair bit of money to spend on one ticket, it was the only big expense on my trip. And more importantly, the match even more amazing that I could have imagined. I have been to many, many sporting events and this is one of the top three for me!
