Why I Switched to T-Mobile (Is Also Why I Recommend It for Travelers) PLUS Get a $250 Referral Bonus if You Switch By August 12, 2026!

If you have been reading posts on here for any amount of time, you already know that I’m always looking for ways to travel better, for cheaper, and/or more often. That doesn’t just mean flights and hotels, it also means finding services that make travel easier.

One of the best changes I’ve made years ago has been switching to T-Mobile.

Originally I switched because of the pricing (and they finally started carrying the iPhone) but I’ve stayed because of the travel perks. Between free international data, complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi, weekly freebies through T-Mobile Tuesdays, and excellent coverage, it’s become one of my favorite travel “hacks” that I use every single trip.

Actually it’s now been over two decades that I have been with T-Mobile and still am very happy with my service!

And if you’ve been thinking about making the switch, there’s an especially good reason to do it right now.

Limited-Time Offer: Through August 12, switch to T-Mobile and receive a $250 referral bonus when the referral requirements are met!

Why I Love T-Mobile for Travel

When I’m traveling, I don’t want to spend time hunting for a different SIM card for each location, paying expensive roaming charges, or worrying whether I’ll have service after landing.

T-Mobile takes care of that.

International Coverage Without Buying a SIM Card

Depending on your plan, you’ll receive:

  • Free texting in hundreds of international destinations
  • International data in many countries – up to 30GB of high-speed data in 215+ countries & destination (depending on plan)
  • Affordable high-speed data passes if you need faster speeds (or more data)
  • Calls at low per-minute rates when traveling
  • Coverage in Canada and Mexico on many plans with up to 30GB of high-speed data (depending on plan)

One thing I love is not having to think about my phone every time I travel.

The travel/international part is the number one reason I have kept T-Mobile as my mobile provider all of these years. I am even more dependent on my phone when I am traveling and especially if I am solo.  With T-Mobile, I don’t have to stress and try to find Wi-Fi and can simply use my iPhone when using maps to navigate places, searching for coffee or restaurants, researching what to do and for staying in touch.

My plan gives me unlimited text and up to 5GB of high-speed data, then unlimited data at up to 256Kbps in 215+ countries and destinations and when I am in Canada or Mexico, my plan covers talk, text & up to 15GB of high speed data/month!

Even with 148 days of travel in 2024 and extended trips in 2025 and 2025, I never ended up buying more data/international plan since the 5GB allowance refreshes accordingly by billing cycle/monthly!

For me, one of the biggest conveniences is simply landing in another country and immediately having service. That convenience alone has saved me countless headaches over the years.

Free In-Flight Wi-Fi

If you fly often, this benefit is fantastic. Eligible T-Mobile plans include complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi on many domestic flights with participating airlines.

That means you can:

  • Browse the web
  • Send emails
  • Stay connected during longer flights
  • Message family and friends

On American Airlines, even with having the highest earned status, I would have had to pay anywhere between $15-$28/segment for Wi-Fi. And on Southwest and United, I would have had to pay $8 for Wi-Fi/segment

It’s another small perk that makes travel much easier as I can use flight time to respond to emails and stay in touch by having down time to respond to messages.

Why I Love T-Mobile When I Am Home

Trade-In / Upgrade Devices

One of my favorite things with T-Mobile is that they treat their existing customers as well as their new customers with no differences in trade-in values towards new phones!

This was a HUGE bonus for me when I was able to upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro and received $830 trade-in value for my iPhone 13!

T-MOBILE TUESDAYS

There haven’t been as incredible deals as in the past, but I do occasionally take advantage of these deals such as a free Shutterfly calendar (with a $7.99 shipping fee!), free photo prints to help keep the photo wall refreshed or $5 movie tickets
