Full Disclosure: I Will ALWAYS Opt To Do a Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Rides

I LOVE hot air balloon sunrise flights! I have been hooked since doing my first ever hot air balloon ride over the numerous temples of Bagan, Burma, then had another magical experience floating above the volcanic landscapes and fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, Türkiye, had such a smooth flight that the pilot was able to dip the basket into the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, NM, US and floated over the Pyramids of Teotihuacan near Mexico City.

So it was one of my must-dos when I found myself heading to Marrakech, Morocco. I couldn’t help but wonder if this one would be worth an early wake up and how it would compare to the others – was I setting myself up to be disappointed?

Best Time to Experience a Marrakech Hot Air Balloon Flight

Weather and Best Time to Take a Hot Air Balloon Flight in Marrakech

Marrakech has a generally warm climate, with hot summers and cooler winters. However, the temperature before sunrise can be very different from what you’ll experience later in the day.

SeasonTypical conditionsNotes
Winter: December – FebruaryCool mornings; mild to warm afternoonsWinter can be a lovely time for ballooning, particularly if you’re hoping to see the Atlas Mountains with snow on the higher peaks.
Spring: March – MayMild mornings; increasingly warm afternoonsSpring is an appealing time to visit Marrakech, with generally pleasant daytime temperatures and countryside landscapes that can look greener following the winter rains.
Summer: June – AugustQuite warm mornings; very hot afternoonsSummer brings intense heat and is low season in Marrakech. A sunrise flight lets you experience the countryside before the hottest part of the day.
Autumn: September – NovemberWarm early autumn; cooler later in the seasonAutumn is another excellent period to consider. Temperatures generally become more comfortable after summer, making it easier to enjoy the rest of your day exploring Marrakech.

Hot air balloon flights operate throughout much of the year when weather conditions permit. The best time for your trip depends on your preferences for temperatures, visibility, and overall comfort.

My recommendation: Spring and autumn are great all-around seasons for a Marrakech trip. Winter is worth considering for the possibility of snowy mountain views, while summer works well if you can handle the heat.

Ultimately, no season guarantees a flight or particular views. Wind, visibility, and other flying conditions matter more than the calendar.

My Experience on the Marrakech Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

Remember when I said that flights are weather dependent and to always schedule your flights early in your travels?

Here’s a personal example of why that really pays off. Due to the high possibility of rain storms (it was pouring when the company called me the evening before), the hot air balloon ride had to be postponed by a day.

Who You Book With Matters – Here’s What I Would Have Done Differently

*Note this was part of a 3-Day Tour that I took and the hot air balloon flight was operated by another unknown company – there’s a lot to this so I have a separate, upcoming post.

Since I have no idea which company was used for my flight, I went with a highly rated company to highlight in the post. I chose this one specifically in that the tour description has clear instructions about pick-up details, messages and communication which was a huge issue for me (with all of my tours in Marrakech).

Early Morning Pickup / Quick Briefing

Pick-up times vary based on flight times with First Flight Guaranteed scheduled pick up times starting as early as 4:20 (and you need to be ready/waiting 10 minutes before)

It was about a 35-40 minute ride from last pick-up to the launch sites for our van.

Berber style tents are setup near the launch sites where you will wait for the full group (our van only had 6 passengers) with coffee and tea offered while we waited

Mornings can be very brisk and there were a few fires going that many were gathered around for the warmth (I found the temperatures to be pleasant for early morning)

The pilots came out and gave a rather short briefing that quickly touched on safety considerations, landing instructions and what to expect on the ride.

Balloon Inflation

Against the early morning sky, you will watch as your team begins the process of inflating the enormous hot air balloon.

Watching a hot air balloon being inflated is part of the experience in itself. The balloon gradually rises from the ground as the crew fills it with hot air, transforming a huge piece of fabric into something capable of carrying you into the sky.

The sky is still dark enough to force my iPhone to use night mode (which explains this terrible photo and distortion as I did not hold steady for three seconds lol). This is a good time to get some photos with other balloons being inflated in the background.

What Experiencing the Marrakech Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride is Like

Getting in and out of the basket: typically someone on the team will assist if needed – see those cutouts, you can use them to help you step into and out (and there’s a bench on the inside that you can use as well)

I forgot to grab full photos of the baskets but they are set up with nine compartments – four on each side of the pilots. Our pilot told us that there would be 28 people per balloon which is 3.5 persons/basket. What I like about these set-up is that the compartments are rectangular vs square so no one is behind others affording everyone a good view.

One of the most magical moments is watching dozens of balloons float in the half-light as your balloon begins the slow ascent upward as the balloons’ flames illuminate the giant canopies, making it a photographer’s dream.

The Jbilets are a range of rocky hills north of Marrakech. Their rugged terrain provides a dramatic contrast to the flatter agricultural landscape around them.

On clear mornings, you may see the Atlas Mountains rising beyond the plains. Their appearance changes throughout the year, and snow can cover some of the higher peaks during the colder months.

I loved seeing all of the other balloons out there – floating up and down as ours did the same.

What I love about hot air balloon rides is how truly peaceful they are – the sun slowly rising as you gently glide your way over the landscapes

I am a sucker for sunrises and sunsets and getting to experience one whilst on a hot air balloon is magical for me. I will always choose the first flight

We were able to catch a glimpse of everyday life around this area with the sheep being led out to graze.

Sometimes you may float above small rural settlements, agricultural plots, and countryside roads, offering a glimpse of everyday life beyond Marrakech’s main tourist areas.

One of my favorite photos with us floating only a couple of meters above the fence with it being framed perfectly with the rising sun and the line of hot air balloons in the distant sky.

Palm groves, cultivated land, and wide-open plains are common features of the surrounding landscape. The sunrise light can make these especially beautiful from the air.

One thing worth knowing: hot air balloons travel with the wind rather than following a fixed route like an aircraft. The exact landscape you see can therefore vary from one flight to another.

Landing / Deflation of Balloon

We had such a smooth landing that the pilot didn’t even announce it (typically you are told to put everything away and then get into the landing/brace position)

Flight time was about 35 minutes but he did allow anyone who wanted to climb into the pilot compartment and blow the hot air (and take photos)

The deflation of the balloon happens with a section at the top of the balloon being retracted (allowing the hot air to escape)

The team will then start to roll up the balloon to push out the remaining air as we head to the van to take us back to the tents for breakfast.

Note that there were not many second flights this day so our balloon was not used again but that might be a possibility. I have friends who told me it was a bit chaotic (and unexpected) to have to rush out of the balloon as it is being held by the team as others wait to get on!

Breakfast & Flight Certificate

The breakfast was pretty sparse but getting a flight certificate with my name in Arabic quickly made up for that disappointment

Return to Marrakech

After breakfast, your transportation will take you back to your accommodation.

Plan on spending approximately 4 – 6 hours on the complete excursion, including transfers, preparations, the flight, and breakfast. That means you may be back in Marrakech in time for a late breakfast or lunch, depending on your departure time and the day’s conditions.

For me it was 5.5 hours as I was back at my Airbnb a little before 10 AM.

Marrakech Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride – What to Wear & Bring

  • Wear layers as mornings can be chilly but it does get toasty when the pilot is firing up the hot air – especially in large basket
  • Also wear closed-toe shoes as you will be climbing in and out of the basket.
  • Don’t forget to pack sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Avoid loose scarves or long dresses as they can get caught/make getting in and out of the basket difficult
  • Don’t forget to fully charge your phone and/or camera and to secure them!
  • At most bring a small bag due to space restrictions in the basket

FAQs: Marrakech Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

  • Is It Safe? Hot air ballooning is an organized aviation activity, but, like any form of flight, it carries risks. Choosing a reputable operator and following the crew’s instructions are essential.
  • Before booking, look for an operator that can explain its pilot qualifications, safety procedures, insurance arrangements, and weather cancellation policy.
  • How long is the flight? The ride lasts 35 – 60 minutes depending on the operator, weather and wind. The entire tour takes between 4 – 6 hours.
  • What time do Marrakech hot air balloon flights start? Most flights take place around sunrise, with pickup commonly scheduled between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM depending on the season, your flight start time and your accommodation. Your operator should confirm the exact time before the excursion.
  • Are Marrakech hot air balloon flights available all year? Flights are offered throughout the year by many operators, subject to suitable weather and availability. A particular date is never guaranteed until the operator confirms that the flight can proceed safely.
  • What happens if my flight is canceled because of weather? Depending on the operator and booking conditions, you may be offered another date or a refund. Check the specific policy before booking, and allow some flexibility in your travel schedule if possible.
    • This happened to me whilst in Marrakech and I was able to reschedule for the following day
  • Can you take a flight if you’re afraid of heights? Typically yes because the balloon travels with the wind, the basket is very stable and does not sway or rock during flight. There is no sense of vertigo or motion.
    • I personally don’t love heights and as long as I don’t look down, it’s all good (also have had others with this phobia tell me that they were fine on their own hot air balloon flights)
  • Is there a weight limit? Check with your flight operator ie for Marrakech By Air the limit is 110 kg or 264.5 lbs
  • Can Children Take a Balloon Flight? Varies by flight operator ie for Marrakech By Air the minimum age is 3 years

TRAVEL TIP: Book Early. Flights often sell out months ahead in peak season – check dates here

Good to Know Before Booking Marrakech Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

  • Book Early in Your Trip: Schedule your balloon flight near the beginning of your stay in Marrakech rather than on your final morning.
    • Flights can be canceled because of weather, and booking earlier gives you more opportunities to reschedule if your itinerary allows.
  • Check What’s Included: Not all balloon packages are identical ie breakfast, transfer, photos/videos
  • Compare Basket Sizes: Shared flights can accommodate different numbers of passengers. A larger basket may be more affordable, while a smaller group or private flight may offer more room and a more intimate experience. Check the operator’s stated passenger capacity and whether the basket has separate compartments.
  • Understand the Cancellation Policy There are two different policies to consider: what happens if you cancel and what happens if the operator cancels due to weather.
    • Some operators offer free cancellation until a specified deadline. Weather cancellations may result in rescheduling or a refund, depending on the booking terms.
    • Read the policy carefully before paying, particularly if your stay in Marrakech is short.
  • Note That Pickup is Confirmed the Evening Before : Operators commonly confirm the precise pickup time closer to departure and communication is done typically via Whatsapp
  • For Pickup: Have phone available, check your messages and make sure the driver can reach your meeting point.
    • Set an alarm, charge your phone, and have your clothes ready the night before.
  • Allow Enough Time in Your Itinerary: Even when everything runs smoothly, a balloon excursion takes several hours. Don’t schedule a nonrefundable activity immediately afterward.
    • If you have a flight out of Marrakech that same day, I would not make the balloon ride part of a tight departure schedule.

Is a Marrakech Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride Worth It? Who Should Consider It?

For travelers who enjoy scenic experiences, unique photo opportunities, and getting outside the city, a hot air balloon flight can be one of the most memorable things to do in Marrakech.

The appeal is the combination of the early-morning atmosphere, the changing light, and the views over the countryside. Depending on the flight route and visibility, you may see the Jbilets hills, rural villages, agricultural land, palm groves, and the Atlas Mountains in the distance.

It’s also a nice contrast to the energy of Marrakech itself. Instead of navigating crowded streets or haggling in the souks, you get to experience a quieter side of Morocco from above.

That said, there are a few things to consider. The pickup can be extremely early, the flight is weather dependent, and the actual time in the air is only part of a several-hour excursion.

My verdict: If a sunrise balloon ride is something you’ve always wanted to experience, Marrakech is a great place to do it ~ especially as it is the most affordable place in the world!
