Hotel Kansas City Review – A Most Charming End To An Incredible Weekend in KC (Unbound Collection by Hyatt Hotel)

Since flight prices were so high the day after the World Cup 26 Quarterfinal match, it made more sense to stay another night in KC. And while I very much enjoyed my stay at the Westin Kansas City, I didn’t want to use so many Marriott points for this next night.

And even though I had gotten a relative bargain for my Quarterfinal match, I also did not want to spend more cash. Luckily there was a Hyatt option that was available on points and in the KC downtown area!

It ended up being the perfect way to end my Kansas City trip – here’s what my stay was like and everything you should know before booking.

THE STAY

First Impressions

Hotel Kansas City, housed in the 1920s Kansas City Club, blends romantic Victorian sensibilities with a dash of dark, moody Gothic Revival architecture finished off with contemporary glamour. The design features rich walnut-paneled walls, intricate stained-glass windows, and dramatic custom chandeliers, along with Victorian-inspired guest rooms in romantic blush, rose, and deep blue hues.

I love how the lobby retains its historic, masculine grit with original wrought-iron chandeliers but then is elegantly contrasted by those large contemporary nylon-tassel lighting sculptures.

Definitely one of those hotels where you pause for a minute just to admire the building before checking in.

Check-In

I took a late check-out at the Westin to hang out at the pool and came over to Hotel Kansas City around 1:40 PM.

There is a dedicated check-in area for World of Hyatt Elite members. The hotel was fairly busy with many people hanging out in the lobby areas and a few people ahead of me in line at the front desk.

I was thanked for being a Globalist and was told that I had been automatically upgraded to a suite but that suite was not ready yet. That was surprising to me as no suites were available when I had booked the day earlier so yayy!

I was planning to drop off my bags anyways and see if there were any spots for the 2 PM KC Trolley Tour (alas no) so that wasn’t an issue.

Around 3:20 PM, I was notified that my room was ready and I could stop by the front desk for my keys.

THE ROOM SUITE

ROOM TYPE: Originally Booked: 2 Queen – Complimentary Upgrade to 1 Bedroom Suite Accessible with 2 Queen Beds Transfer Shower (World of Hyatt Globalist bene) / Note: 2 Queen room booked because that was what was bookable on points (I would have preferred a King) ROOM # : 1313

ROOM SIZES/CONFIGURATIONS: The standard 2 Queen room at Hotel Kansas City is 341 square feet, the 2 Queen Beds Corner is 407 square feet and this ADA-friendly suite is 609 square feet

As described by the hotel: “Designed to pay homage to the hotel’s intriguing history as a prominent Kansas City social club, our romantic, Victorian-inspired rooms and suites offer vintage touches and modern amenities in the heart of downtown.”

Walking into the suite, you immediately come into a dark green jewel toned eating area with this striking portrait that definitely is giving off Victorian vibes.

As you walk into the suite, there’s a large closet in this area and with this being an ADA-friendly room, there’s a clothes steamer that isn’t positioned too high up.

Almost all of the hotel seemed very intentional and well-thought out, this suite didn’t quite live up to the rest of the spaces or at least this room.

As you walk further into the space and into the separate living space, the couch and tv stand/dressers stick out like sore thumbs. Quite utilitarian (and interesting choice to go with a drab tan color) and did not match the mood of the rest of the suite’s vintage-inspired custom furnishings like the chandler in this room

Note that the coffee machine seems to be weirdly spaced and low but this is an ADA-friendly suite so that make sense.

As you walk into the bedroom of the suite, the romance and Victorian charm come back with wood details and great use of accent colors up the wall behind the beds.

In this room, the TV stand/dresser has brass handles and accents along with scalloped edge details to incorporate it into the design.

In the same vein, a modern day convenience like individual reading lights is accomplished via these sconces.

One perk about this being an ADA-friendly suite is that the bathroom is massive (and since I am vertically challenged, I appreciated the lower countertops!)

And when Hotel Kansas City said Carerra marble bathroom, boy do they mean it! Besides the grey and black tiles for flooring, the remaining tiles along with the dual vanities were all Carerra marble.

There’s a transfer shower (my robe is obscuring the built-in shower chair) and there’s a separate bath area that is also ADA-friendly.

CO Bigelow bath amenities (shampoo, conditioning rinse and body wash in large bottles + hand soaps) line the counter along with brass bathroom containers.

A mix of complimentary (KOSTAS: OPEN DANCE CLASS) to paid (THE HAWK’S NEST: LIVE MUSIC & DJ ENTERTAINMENT – $5 cover, $10 fitness classes), Hotel Kansas City offers a lineup of activities as unique as the hotel – see the events and calendar here

FITNESS

A typical sized hotel gym with an assortment of cardio machines along with an assortment of free weights, kettle bells, and medicine balls.

MEETING SPACES

I don’t typically touch on meeting spaces for hotels since I am traveling for leisure but I could not talk about this. (And now am wondering if this should be something that I do cover?)

The stand out space here is the Tudor Ballroom and “its refined preserved beauty, making it ideal for elegant events or momentous meetings. The room’s centerpiece is the two-story stained-glass mural crafted by a well-known artist. The second-story balcony overlooks the main floor, providing additional room”

BARS / RESTAURANTS

The Town Company

The Town Company has become one of Kansas City’s most acclaimed restaurants led by James Beard-nominated Executive Chef Johnny Leach and Executive Pastry Chef Helen Jo Leach, serving creative American cuisine with locally inspired flavors. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, it’s worth considering for dinner.

HOURS: Open for Dinner: Wed – Sat 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM Reservations are strongly recommended

Nighthawk

From Hyatt: Nestled within Hotel Kansas City, Nighthawk is a vibrant performance venue and cocktail lounge where playful cocktails, tasty snacks and a striking red curtain stage set the tone for a night out in downtown Kansas City. Explore a gallery wall adorned with posters of the great musicians who have graced Kansas City’s stages, then take in live music and spirited performances that carry that legacy forward. Nighthawk also hosts Nightingales Drag Show on the first Wednesday of every month from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., bringing even more modern Kansas City energy to this storied space.

Lobby Market

Located in the lobby across from the front desk, serving coffee along with house-made pastry at our café and market. Our grab-and-go restaurant also offers pre-packaged goodies and snacks when you need a quick lunch or bite on the run.

HOURS: Daily 6:30 AM – 12:30 PM

The Classic, Lobby Bar

Located off Burrard Street in the main lobby, Grain Tasting Bar specializes in artisan cocktails, regional wines and craft beer. The menu selections are designed to be a perfect accompaniment to the flavors of British Columbia. 

As it worked out, I was there the first day that breakfast was being served as a sit down meal within The Classic (before you would order at the Lobby Market and could eat in this space). I only knew that because I typically end up talking shop with hotel people but I would have never known otherwise especially since I had such a lovely server, June!

HOURS: Breakfast – Daily 7 AM – 10:30 AM | Bar – Daily 11 AM – 12 AM | Happy Hour – Monday-Friday 3 PM – 6 PM

In-Room Dining

In-room dining offers a selection of dishes from Nighthawk, Lobby Market, and The Classic, showcasing familiar and comforting American cuisine. Our menus are thoughtfully crafted by James Beard Semi-Finalists, Executive Chef Johnny Leach and Executive Pastry Chef Helen Jo Leach.

HOURS: Daily 7 AM – 10 PM

THE VIBE / AROUND THE HOTEL

From the moment you walk through the doors, it’s clear this isn’t your typical Hyatt or even typical hotel.

What was so interesting to me was how not only did they keep the look of the historic private club, the lobby was treated by those staying here as one. There were always people hanging out in the lobby and not in the typical waiting for an Uber with their luggage hotel way.

On Monday, the lobby was filled with people working on laptops throughout the space every time I was in the lobby.

SERVICE EXPERIENCE

The valet guys were great here with always being at the front door and opening it.

Service was solid but not memorable (besides June at the restaurant) but I need to acknowledge that my impression was affected by the fact that I was having a lot of extraordinarily great interactions throughout the city.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

What I Loved About Hotel Kansas City

• Friendly, professional staff providing good service
• Great option for Hyatt points and Category 1-4 Free Night Award redemptions
• Beautiful historic restoration
• Excellent downtown location
• Walkable to major attractions (Power & Light District, T-Mobile Center and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts)
  • Also consider checking out my personal favorite within walking distance – Kansas City Central Library
• Boutique atmosphere with Hyatt reliability
• Comfortable rooms
• Great restaurant
• Easy access to the free streetcar

No Hotel is Perfect, Some Potential Drawbacks For This Hotel

• Valet parking can add significantly to your nightly cost.
• Some rooms are a bit smaller due to the historic building layout.
• No swimming pool nor full-service spa.
• While none of these were deal-breakers for me, but they’re worth knowing before booking.

Who Should Stay Here?

This hotel is ideal for:

• World of Hyatt members (great use for a Category 1 – 4 Free Night Award!)
• Couples on a weekend getaway
• Food lovers
• Business travelers wanting a unique hotel
• Concert-goers visiting T-Mobile Center
• Anyone who appreciates historic architecture
• Anyone wanting to explore downtown without renting a car

This is not the hotel for travelers seeking a resort-style property with a pool, or those traveling with young children and want more family-focused amenities or those looking for the lowest-priced hotel downtown.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Hotel Kansas City delivers something that’s increasingly hard to find: a hotel with genuine character. Rather than feeling like another interchangeable downtown property, it embraces the history of the former Kansas City Club while offering the comfort and reliability you’d expect from Hyatt.

For World of Hyatt members, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone wanting a walkable base to explore downtown, it’s an easy recommendation. If you drive, you’ll want to factor valet parking into your budget, but the combination of location, design, and service makes it one of the city’s most memorable places to stay.
