LOGISTICS
PORT: Canada Place | CURRENCY: Canadian Dollar (CAD) | LANGUAGE: English (and French)
DOCK | Arrival: | Departure 16:00 | 1 USD = 1.41 CAD (CURRENT EXCHANGE RATE)
MONEY MATTERS
Canada uses the Canadian Dollar. Vancouver is nearly cashless with credit cards and mobile wallets being widely accepted and preferred almost everywhere including for public transport, parking lots, food trucks. FYI I was able to use my AMEX at nearly all places including buses + Skytrain (only times that I could not were at a couple of Granville Island Public Market stalls). If you are going to use cash, you should use an ATM or bring Canadian Dollars as US dollars are not accepted.
COMMUNICATION
Technically French is the other official language of Canada so most things are dual-language disclosed but British Columbia is an English speaking province.
PORT INFO
BEAUTIFUL TIP: Reminder that arrival times for port days are estimates for when the ship will be docked and may not be when the port has given approval to the ship to allow passengers to get off. IF the activity start time is close to arrival times, I will always reach out the activity/tour provider and find out exactly what their policy is if I am not able to be there on time. I have found that many operators are flexible especially if the majority/all of the participants are from the cruise ship but some may not be able to accommodate late arrivals with no refund given. Whilst both scenarios are valid business practices, don’t make the mistake of finding out it’s the latter when you aren’t able to join!

There are multiple tourist‑info desks outside in Canada Place’s main plaza. The first one you see with the Canadian flag belongs to Gray Line West Coast Sightseeing. If you go west towards the main Vancouver Convention Centre/the big glass building close by, you will find Destination Vancouver’s Tourist Information Desk as seen above.
I don’t know of a more conveniently located cruise terminal anywhere in the world. The ships dock right in downtown Vancouver with so many places within close to medium walking distance. Furthermore, the Waterfront Station is located only 5 minutes away which gives you access to the SkyTrain (including the Canada Line that connects to the airport), Sea Bus and West Coast Express.
CRUISE TERMINAL LOGISTICS
- The terminal is located within Canada Place that is a multi-use facility that also houses the Vancouver Convention Centre, Pan Pacific Hotel and FlyOver Canada.
- There is day baggage storage available here for cruise passengers only (no overnight storage is available) – Purchase at the Information center.
- The three berth terminal can service up to four cruise ships at a time

WEATHER, BEST TIME TO VISIT AND SEASONAL TIPS FOR VANCOUVER

- All Year Long
- One thing cruise passengers often underestimate is how variable Vancouver weather can be, even within a single day. No matter when your cruise visits Vancouver, it’s smart to pack for changing conditions
- What to Pack: waterproof rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes, layers instead of one heavy coat (how thick depends on season), sunglasses (yes – even in spring and fall!), portable umbrella
- Spring (March – May)
- Best for: Cherry blossoms, gardens, fewer cruise crowds, comfortable sightseeing
- Average daytime temperatures: 50 – 65°F (10 – 18°C)
- Spring is one of my favorite times to visit Vancouver. Cherry blossoms bloom throughout the city, Stanley Park begins to come alive, and you’ll avoid the peak summer crowds. Expect a mix of sunshine and rain showers, so layers are essential.
- Summer (June – August)
- Best for: Shore excursions, outdoor dining, whale watching, hiking, kayaking, and sightseeing
- Average daytime temperatures: 68 – 80°F (20 – 27°C)
- Summer is peak Alaska cruise season and the busiest time to visit Vancouver. Long daylight hours mean you’ll have plenty of time to explore, and rainfall is significantly lower than during the rest of the year. Although temperatures are usually pleasant, evenings along the waterfront can still feel cool.
- Popular attractions such as Capilano Suspension Bridge and Granville Island can become busy by late morning, so early starts are worthwhile.
- Fall (September – November)
- Best for: Fall colors, food festivals, fewer tourists, lower hotel prices
- Average daytime temperatures: 50 – 70°F (10 – 21°C)
- September is often considered one of Vancouver’s best months, with comfortable temperatures and relatively dry weather continuing into early fall. By October and November, rainfall increases and the surrounding mountains begin receiving snow, creating beautiful scenery on clear days.
- Cruise passengers visiting late in the season should be prepared for changing weather conditions throughout the day.
- Winter (December – February)
- Best for: Holiday markets, festive lights, nearby skiing, cozy cafés
- Average Daytime Temperatures: 40 – 50°F (4 – 10°C)
- Winters are cool and damp rather than extremely cold. Snow is uncommon downtown but common in nearby mountains – which means it’s possible to enjoy a day on the ski slopes before returning to the city!
- What to Pack: Waterproof shoes, warm layers, waterproof jacket, & hat and gloves for evening walks
HOLIDAYS, FESTIVALS, SPECIAL EVENTS & HOLIDAYS IN VANCOUVER
If your cruise coincides with one of Vancouver’s major events, expect larger crowds, higher hotel prices (if embarking or disembarking), and increased demand for shore excursions.
- FIFA World Cup 2026 (Vancouver Host City): June 13 – July 7, 2026 / Vancouver hosts multiple World Cup matches, making this one of the busiest summers the city has ever experienced. Book excursions well in advance (very true as I visited here during this time!)
- Vancouver International Jazz Festival: Late June – Early July / One of North America’s largest jazz festivals, with hundreds of performances including many free outdoor concerts.
- Vancouver Pride: Late July – Early August / Nine days of celebrations culminating in the Pride Parade and Davie Village Festival on August 2.
- Pacific National Exhibition (PNE): Mid-August through Labour Day / Historic summer fair with concerts, rides, exhibits and food.
- Vancouver International Film Festival: Late September – Early October / International film festival featuring hundreds of screenings.
- Vancouver Christmas Market: Late November – December 24 / German-inspired Christmas market beside Canada Place with festive food, shopping and entertainment.
- Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge: Late November – Early January
- If your cruise visits on a Canadian holidays, government offices and banks will be closed, while many attractions remain open with holiday hours.
EAT / DRINK
Vancouver is one of North America’s best food cities. Food tours are particularly popular excursions because Vancouver’s culinary scene is outstanding. Venturing on your own? Don’t miss:
- Pacific salmon
- Spot prawns (seasonal)
- Sushi
- Dungeness crab
- Dim sum
- Poutine
- Nanaimo bars
SHOPPING & SOUVENIRS
Popular shopping areas include:
- Robson Street: Vancouver’s premier outdoor shopping district mainly between Burrard and Jervis St / Distance from terminal is 0.5 miles/~800 meters (8-13 minute walk)
- Known for: international flagship stores, boutiques, specialty beauty shops as well as restaurants and cafes
- Gastown: Historic area known for its steam-powered clock and home to high end shopping and fine dining / Distance from Canada Place is .25 miles/400-500 metere (5-10 minute walk)
- Known for: independent + trendy boutiques, local artwork, Indigenous-inspired gifts, handmade goods
- Granville Island Market Many consider this public market a must visit in Vancouver with vibrant mix of local food, artisan crafts, and bustling waterfront atmosphere / Public transit options: #50 bus directly to the island but the scenic way is take sky train (Canada Line from Waterfront station to Yaletown-Roundhouse) then take False Creek Ferry
- Known for: local foods, specialty products, artisan crafts
Bring home a piece of the Canada with these local favorites / popular souvenirs
- Indigenous Art: Vancouver is rich in First Nations culture – consider artist-signed prints, paddles, jewelry, and children’s toys from Native Northwest.
- BC Jade: Sourced right in British Columbia, polished stones and carved jade pendants make striking, long-lasting keepsakes
- Standing Spruce Soaps: Handcrafted, entirely natural skincare bars and wellness products made using wild-harvested coastal ingredients
- Maple Syrup: A classic Canada essential ~ consider pure syrups, maple candies, and creams
- Smoked Salmon: Regional specialty
- Icewine: Canada is the world’s largest producer of icewine
Beautiful Tip: For authentic cultural souvenirs, look for local crafts rather than imported trinkets.
