Why Consider a Morning Na Pali Coast Snorkel Tour

Trade winds around Kauai usually pick up later in the day so snorkeling tours are typically scheduled in the morning. Morning tours give you smoother water, clearer snorkel conditions, and a more relaxed ride along the cliffs. Also the earlier starts gives you better chances of seeing wildlife – specifically spinner dolphins during the sailing.

My Experience on the NaPali Boat Tour

Meetup

This tour does not offer pick up so I drove to Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor and was able to easily check in (reminder that you must check in 30 minutes prior to departure). As I booked the evening before, I completed my waiver at check in. There was a safety briefing once everyone was checked.

Catamaran

The catamaran was as advertised. On this tour, there were around the maximum of 32 people and the boat never felt crowded and there was plenty of space to lounge.

While we were heading to the first stop, the crew began to distribute gear – snorkels and fins to everyone that was going to snorkel.

Snorkel Stop

Most morning tours kick off wMost morning tours kick off with snorkeling before heading down the Nā Pali Coast, and honestly, this is the perfect order. Why? You experience calmer waters before the winds pick up.

One thing that I loved about this tour is that the snorkeling part isn’t one of those rushed jump in for 10-15 minutes snorkel stops as we spent about 45 minutes here. It’s relaxed, well paced, and beginner friendly but still interesting if you’ve snorkeled before.

The water is clear (about as clear as much of the Caribbean) and there was a fair amount of colorful, tropical fish but we did not see any turtles.

The other reason why I like that snorkeling was first? While it was still enjoyable, the real star of the show is coming up and we start making our way to the Nā Pali Coast.

Wildlife Sightings

And within 5 minutes of leaving the reef, we encounter dolphins!

Spinner Dolphins

Another reason to choose the early morning departures is that you have the best chance to see these amazing and playful creatures. We were really lucky in that we had multiple pods of spinner dolphins that swam around the boat – playfully darting around the vessels and later a second pod that showed off their acrobatic skills as they raced and leapt out of the water to the side of the boat!

Humpback Whales

I was visiting during whale season (which typically is between December through March) and was so happy that we were fortunate enough to see breaching whales during this snorkel tour as well!

Nā Pali Coast

Even if you’ve seen photos before, nothing really prepares you for the scale of the Nā Pali Coast in person.

Located along Kauai’s rugged northwestern shoreline, the coastline stretches roughly 17 miles and is famous for the sea caves and arches carved into the coastline, razor sharp ridgelines, towering emerald cliffs rising thousands of feet above the ocean, and waterfalls cascading straight into the Pacific ocean.

The name Nā Pali roughly translates to “the cliffs,” though locals often describe the coastline as something spiritual rather than simply scenic.

And honestly? That feels accurate.

This part of Kauai has an almost untouchable quality to it – dramatic, remote, and deeply connected to Hawaiian history and culture.

And seeing it from the water hits different. You really feel how remote and untouched this stretch of Kauai is as you see hidden beaches inaccessible by car

What Was The Boat Ride Really Like?

We had a pretty calm morning that made the experience very magical.

In typical me fashion, I booked the larger catamarans as that was what was available the evening before. It was as advertised and offered a smoother ride, more space, more shade.

I would have opted for a smaller zodiac boat but note that while it would have been more fun (at least in my eyes) as we would have been able to get even closer to the coast, it would have definitely had significantly more spray, more bounce.

Beautiful tips: If you’re prone to seasickness, take meds before boarding (two doses – one the evening before and the second at least an hour before sailing), eat a light breakfast, and stick to the middle of the boat.

Food & Drink

Food and drink are included on this tour – lunch, snacks, water, and soft drinks so no need to bring your own food or drinks! It felt too apropos to NOT get a Kona lager while we sailed which was chef’s kiss to cap the experience.

Makana Charters

One of the reasons I booked with Makana Charters is that they are Native Hawaiian owned and it was really special to be able to have ancient Hawaiian history relayed by their crew.

The respect and love of the land was so evident though the entire trip as they told us all about the named cliffs and valleys that we would have never noticed on our own along with pointing out filming locations along the coast (anyone else try to recognize places from films, magazine, television as you travel?!

Final Thoughts – An Amazing Way to see the Nā Pali Coast

Nā Pali Coast boat tours are one of those travel moment that sticks with you long after you have left Kauai. You’re paying for access to a place that’s difficult to see any other way and the morning snorkel is a solid bonus, not just filler.

One of the things I loved most about this tour with Makana Charters was hearing the stories behind the coastline instead of just staring at it through a camera lens – helping to deepen my love and respect for the Native Hawaiians and their beautiful homeland.

A morning snorkel + Nā Pali Coast tour isn’t just another boat ride, it’s the kind of experience where cliffs feel impossibly close, the water turns shades of blue you didn’t know existed (and could change so quickly depending on the light), and you realize very quickly why this coastline is talked about in almost mythical terms.

Best Time of Year for NaPali Snorkel Tours in Kauai

Weather can play a large role in how much you’ll enjoy this tour, especially the snorkeling portion.

  • May–September (Best Months Overall): During these months, you are more likely to have calmer seas, better underwater visibility and warmer water temperatures. But this is high tourist season with kids out of school so there are often more boats out on the water. With more people, early morning departures help thin out the crowds a bit.
  • November–March: There is a lot more variability during this time of the year as bigger swells are common and snorkeling may be shortened or skipped some days. But coastline views are still stunning (I did my tour in March and can attest to this) plus this is when there is a higher chance of seeing humpback whales!
  • Typical conditions / temperatures:
    • Air temps: mid-70s to low-80s °F year-round
    • Water temps: ~75–80°F
    • Morning winds are lighter than afternoon

FAQs for Kauai: NaPali Boat Tour on the Amelia K

  • Is this tour good if I’m not a strong swimmer? Yes. Most tours provide flotation devices, and snorkeling areas are chosen based on conditions. While you don’t need advanced skills, you do need to comfort being in the water and able to swim.
  • Is the morning or afternoon snorkel better? Morning. You’ll enjoy calmer winds, less boat traffic and better visibility
  • Will we definitely snorkel? Snorkeling depends on ocean conditions. Morning tours offer the best chance, but safety always comes first. Even on days snorkeling is limited, the Nā Pali Coast portion alone makes the tour worthwhile.
  • What should I bring? Essentials include reef-safe sunscreen, towel, sunglasses, waterproof camera, and light jacket or windbreaker.
    • Easiest to wear your swimsuit under your clothes and leave bulky bags behind as space is limited.
  • Is seeing wildlife common? Yes* as you might be able to see dolphins and turtles year round and whales during the winter months. *Even if it is common to see wildlife, there is never any guarantee that you will see them on your sailing as many times, it’s down to luck.
  • Is food included? Yes for this tour, lunch, snacks, water, and soft drinks are included so no need to bring your own food or drinks!
  • Can kids go snorkeling? Makana Charters allows children 4 years old and up on their larger vessels and age 9 and up on their smaller vessels.
  • How rough is the boat ride? It varies by boat type and ocean/weather conditions. While mornings are usually calmer, but expect some movement as it’s the open ocean in Hawai’i.
    • Catamarans = smoother, more stable
    • Rafts/zodiacs = faster, splashier, more adventurous
  • Is seasickness common? It can be as the ocean can be a lot rougher than people anticipate. If you’re prone to motion sickness:

Tips for Kauai: NaPali Boat Tour on the Amelia K

  • Book your tour early especially during peak seasons as tours fill up quickly.
  • Go early for the best conditions: Winds typically increase after noon, making morning tours smoother and clearer.
  • Waterproof cameras to capture the best shots: There will likely be spray from the waves as you are cruising along the NaPali coast (some of my friends use this waterproof phone pouch)
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen: Hawai’i requires eco-friendly sun protection to preserve ocean and coral health.
  • Towels: They are not provided so don’t forget to back one
  • Pack a light jacket or windbreaker: Along with a cover-up, I am really happy that I brought along a jacket and was able to comfortably enjoy the boat ride when the heavy cloud cover made the boat ride colder than expected
