The best types of travel resources are those that can help with all types of vacations and GetYourGuide is one I use frequently on my trips. I have used it for a variety of different travels: from making planning a multi-generational trip simpler to booking cruise stop excursions for a small group. And ESPECIALLY for making it possible to secure access to a venue on a solo trip (due to lack of planning on my part!)

What is GetYourGuide?

GetYourGuide (GYG) is a platform that was recommended as an alternative from the cruise line’s expensive tours and excursions when I was planning a big family vacation. After taking a look around the site, I discovered that there were many other travel activities like skip the line museum passes, airport transportation that you could also reserve.

What makes GetYourGuide so helpful?

  • Extensive choices: with so many places to see and things to do
    • I love how the site is organized with Culture, Food, Nature and Sport sections
  • Customization with so many different operators and tours options, you can book according to your travel style or budget
  • Affordability of the offerings versus from the cruise line or booking through a travel agency
  • Flexibility with the booking process from being able to book now, pay later and many of the tours having a FREE 24 hour cancellation policy
  • Support: 24/7 customer support
  • Trip Inspiration: So much information to help you really make the most out of a trip

Use GetYourGuide for Trip Inspiration

Learn more about a destination with GetYourGuide! I find the Trip Inspiration section so helpful as you access destination guides, insider tips, and inspiration for so many places around the world and help you discover the world’s most unforgettable travel experiences. And it’s really great that all of this information can help all types of travelers from those that plan out their trips a year in advance or even those like me that research what to do when you are in a city!

How to book with GetYourGuide

To find a tour on GetYourGuide, there’s a number of ways to search from looking through the different sections (ie cultural, food) or if you are unsure about exactly what you want to book, you can just type in the location

Beautiful Tip: The number of tours offered can be a plus or negative so what you type in here should be as general or specific as your search is. If you want to plan a trip to Iceland, you can look up Iceland or narrow down a bit more to Reykavik to see all possible offerings for the capital vs all offerings for Iceland.

  • At the top of the page, you are given options for Top things to do, Day trips, Nature & adventure, Extreme sports & adrenaline, Food & drinks, Shows & musicals, Culture & history, and Family-friendly activities
  • The page is organized into different sections: Top activities, Top Sights in Reykjavik, Uniquely Reykjavik and All activities
  • This page will give you a general overview of the activity including the activity name, activity length, if pick-up is available, if it has been certified by GYG, ratings, and pricing

If you are interested in or want to see more information, click on the name of the tour as seen above we are looking at the From Reykjavik: Blue Lagoon Admission with Transfers

  • This is where you will find the itinerary including where the tour starts and ends along with what’s included and not included, detailed information, cancellation policy, meeting points and additional information.
  • You will also be able to see photos (from the operator in the information section).
  • To see other travelers’ photos and reviews, scroll down past the tour information – I love that the review section allows you to filter by traveler type (couple, groups of friends, solo, families) and by star ratings!

Beautiful Tip: While it’s always good to check the recent tours, it can be helpful to look reviews from the previous year for the specific time of year that you will be taking the tour for more accurate insight into what your experience may be like. Also make use of the filters as an experience for a solo traveler may look dramatically different than for a family

To check on availability, fill out the information with the number of participants and date and click on ‘Check Availability’ (in the middle of the page). This will give you pricing information for each available package for this booking (per person and total), the times available, cancellation policy, etc

To book, select a package and time and click ‘Book Now’ to be redirected to the checkout page

My experience with GetYourGuide + how it made things less stressful

While I have traveled extensively throughout the world, most of it has been solo or with friends who have similar travel styles, so planning what would be my first cruise was an entirely different beast for me. Plus this was to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary and for 15 people ranging from a toddler to my parents in their seventies!

I ended up using GetYourGuide for a few reasons:

  • First, it saved us a tremendous amount of money versus booking directly with the cruise line
  • Second, the full breadth of the experience on GYG from being able to choose from multiple operators to being able to see real reviews of the activities, tours to the support aspect (from GYG and the operators themselves).
  • What I didn’t expect was how GetYourGuide just made planning everything so much easier! You can create wish lists, activities offering the free cancellation policy, having all tours information accessible in one place (vs if I had booked independently = having to reference each tour operator’s website for descriptions/info/etc when needed). Those were so helpful when I was deciding (or people giving me some input) on what excursions to book for each location, then to contacting operators for more information/clarification and finally when we went on/did the tours/activities.

One example of that in action for the above booking: From Reykjavik: Blue Lagoon Admission with Transfers

  • Convenience: We were unable to visit the Blue Lagoon on our full day tour from Reykavik and this activity was perfect as it took care of admission AND transportation from Reykavik AND to Keflavik (the international airport)!
  • Savings: Instead of paying the cruise company $300+/person for this excursion, we saved nearly half by going with GYG
  • Being able to see a full description of the different options and read through the reviews on the different companies made it very easy to quickly decide on a company and book.

Helpful hints

  • The name of the activity provider is provided in the tour description so it is easy to read other sources for company reviews and to check pricing. Every tour that I booked on GYG vs what the operators were charging on their own website was virtually the same for that cruise
  • The other big reason why I used GetYourGuide was with the ability to book through a shopping portal for major points (did you really think that I wouldn’t have some related to travel hacking here)?

Final thoughts and why I am still using GetYourGuide today

Back to solo travels for me and I still use GYG for the same reasons. One benefit in particular has turned out to be unbelievably helpful: the free cancellation policy. Travel is so unpredictable in this day and age especially as I have been traveling to areas majorly impacted by weather. In many cases, if I had booked directly with the operator, I would not have had such a generous cancellation policy as the one when booking with GetYourGuide. I have had quite a few ports cancelled and was able to cancel my GYG bookings without penalty but I know of others booking directly or through other channels were not so lucky and weren’t given a refund.

And then there’s the issue that I often don’t plan ahead has come back to nip me in the bud especially when visiting popular locations but luckily I had GetYourGuide! Unfortunately all of the spots were booked but I was able to visit the Reichstag building by booking a Rooftop Aperitif at Reichstag Käfer Restaurant

Lastly, I haven’t had a negative experience with any of my GetYourGuide bookings but I think there’s two additional reasons

  • First, I feel comfortable with asking a lot of questions beforehand with the operators if needed – especially as I have been booking shore excursions on my comped cruises. There are so many companies out there so why give your money to those that aren’t responsive or helpful? For example, if you are on a cruise when it’s vital to get back to the ship, you can opt to go with a tour that operates in such a way to ensure that.
  • Secondly, I think that the companies being vetted by GetYourGuide. makes a difference in why they are responsive. There is a powerful motivator for them to stay on the platform so this works in our favor!

Do you use GetYourGuide to book? Will you now?
