Hi, I’m Rosemary!

This started as a blog to keep my friends and family updated as I embarked on my first ever solo trip in 2015. I would chronicle my travels through South America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe and people would be able to follow along.

I learned that I would rather be immersed in the moments and was/am not great about writing whilst traveling. Also sadly, due to security concerns (especially while traveling solo), it would be better to write after I was back home.

And then the focus evolved as I combined sharing about my journeys along with another passion: making your money work for you AKA the “how I was able to travel so much and for so long”.

That part of the story began over two decades ago…I was fortunate in having an uncle that not only traveled for work but was also very into the points and miles world. He was generous not only in gifting me free flights but also in imparting his knowledge and wisdom.

And so began my love affair with travel hacking.

I learned about credit cards and sign up bonuses and then about loyalty programs and started to redeem my own points and miles for free flights and hotel stays. I developed financial discipline so that I could do what I loved which included traveling as much as possible. I would save as much as I could and if I had to spend, I would make every penny count.

As more people would ask me about my travels, I realized that most didn’t really know anything about this other obsession of mine. To them it was the dark arts, black magic – if it was so easy, why wasn’t everyone doing it..or worse was there something amiss about what I was doing?

And so that has become part of my mission: to introduce and teach people about travel hacking (which is simply strategies and/or techniques adopted to allow one to travel for cheaper, better and/or more often)

But always with my original intent front and center: to showcase this beautiful world and to empower and inspire you to travel and create your version of a beautiful life.

What You Should Know

  • I can only dream of having a trust fund and there’s no sugar daddies that pay for these trips – I fund all of my own trips.
  • While I will never knock the hustle, I am not an influencer nor do I strive to be one. My trips are not sponsored – I use cash, points and miles to pay for all of my travels.
  • I joke but there’s more than a grain of truth to the statement that my entire life revolves around money or travel hacks – besides the necessities of life, my money is spent on food, experiences and travel: my blog could also be described as me drinking, eating (lots of ice cream) and dancing my way around the world.
  • I am an insatiably curious person: I want to learn everything about everything – I love culture, history, dancing, food, arts, sports, museums, the outdoors which means that I want to go everywhere (it’s just that some places are higher than others on my wanderlist) and do/experience everything.
  • What this translates to in real life is that I choose to travel wherever I can find the best deal for…with the results being that my travels are quite eclectic. I don’t seek out a specific type of travel – I have stayed at and enjoyed places as varied hostels (including dorm rooms) to AirBnb to luxury hotels to overnight sleeper buses/trains.
  • *there has been this pesky knee/injury that I have been dealing with since January 6, 2021, and it has been pricey – silver lining is that I have been able to get a lot of sign up bonuses from my expenses but also that I need to baby it a lot sooo lie-flat seats and more comfortable accommodations are currently necessary
  • PS:THIS has been done on a salary that is often less than the US median salary (or substantially less when I have taken months+ to travel) WHILE still saving for retirement (I have more than the amount saved experts say I should for my age) AND OWN my own home because I know there are those saying this is fiscally irresponsible – it’s not; I just prioritize travel and experiences…

What My FREE Travel Really Costs

I’m peeling back the curtains so you can see not only how I get to the “free travel” but what it ends up truly costing me!

Why so much information and stats?!

I include all my spreadsheets, breakdown of spending and savings, and other info not to intimidate (or even thinking most care) but merely to help inform. Take what you want or need from the data as well as feel free to ignore it if you don’t find it helpful or think it’s too much. I get that most aren’t numbers people but this is just me literally providing receipts…of the cash, miles and points spent.
