Taxes and Fees

The Promo Fare are discounts applied to the base mileage requirement, while cash surcharges, taxes, and carrier-imposed fees still apply and yes these are significantly higher than US based carriers but keep in mind that is offset by the fact that you are likely using less miles than booking with one of those airlines =)

What to Know About Fare Types

Since September 2026, Air France and KLM award tickets are booked under Light, Standard, or Flex tiers Promo pricing often corresponds to Light tier rules (check baggage, lounge, and cancellation restrictions before booking)

  • Light – This is the Fare Class that a Promo Rate falls into
    • The Fare that will cost the least amount of points with significant trade-offs
    • One of the most important distinctions with this fare is that it is non-refundable (remember that even if your plans are ironclad, that life can happen so really weigh if the points savings justify losing 45,000 or more points for a business promo)
    • The other significant difference with the Light Fare is that lounge access in not included
    • Only one checked bag (32 kg) included in fare
  • Business Standard
    • This was the promo/saver fare before September
    • Requires 25% more miles than a Light Fare (in this case Promo fare)
    • Changeable (and pay possible fare difference) and refundable for a EUR 70 fee
    • Two checked bags (32 kg each) included in fare
  • Business Flex
    • Requires 50% more miles than a Light Fare (in this case Promo fare)
    • No cancellation fee nor change fee (only pay possible fare difference)
    • Also includes free standard seat selection (vs at check-in for the other two fares)
  • SkyPriority Benefits
    • Less important for business flights but for those with SkyTeam elite status, you will receive SkyPriority benefits on all fare types

Tips to Maximize This Promo

  • Search Using the Flexible Calendar
    • Flying Blue’s reward search calendar lets you see all available dates with Promo Rewards pricing which is a must-use tool (remember that the more flexible that you can be with your dates, the likelier it is to be able to snag reward flights!)
  • Kids Get 25% Off
    • One of the hidden gems about the Flying Blue program is that children’s redemptions are 25% off INCLUDING on Promo Rewards!
  • Routing of promo reward tickets
    • Promo reward tickets to long-haul destinations are available for flights to/from Europe on Air France and KLM operated flights. These rewards include connecting flights within Europe (either outbound or return) through Paris or Amsterdam.
    • What this means is that the flights aren’t only to Paris or Amsterdam, you can fly from Seattle to Copenhagen via Amsterdam on KLM (I have personally booked a Promo Business Fare from Mexico City via Paris to Milan on Air France)
  • Transfer Bonuses
    • One of the hidden gems about the Flying Blue program is that children’s redemptions are 25% off INCLUDING on Promo Rewards!
  • Act Fast!!
    • Promo Rewards have very limited space and the best deals are booked quickly, especially long-haul and business class awards.
