Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Cappadocia – Türkiye (Guide and Review)

After doing my first ever hot air balloon ride in Bagan, Burma, I would take my second flight in as magical of a location: Cappadocia, Türkiye. Even better was that this ride would begin early enough that I would be able to watch the sun slowly light up the horizon and illuminate the volcanic landscapes and fairy chimneys. Would this experience match what I had seen on Instagram and truly be a Wanderlist item or would I find that it was another example of highly edited and manipulated images not matching up with reality? Come take a look to see what my experience was like and learn everything you need to know about a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia.

Ancient Roots

Cappadocia’s history stretches back thousands of years. Early civilizations including the Hittites, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans shaped the culture and architecture of the region. Many of Cappadocia’s famous underground cities, such as Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, were carved out by ancient communities seeking refuge from invaders.

My Experience on the Cappadocia Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

Early Morning Pickup / Quick Briefing

  • This activity does include pickup/drop off and I was picked up as scheduled and driven to the balloon launch site which varies day-to-day depending on weather.
  • The briefing includes going over safety considerations such as how to get into and out of the basket, what you can and cannot do during the flight and how to prepare for the landing. Then they will discuss what to expect during the flight and what we will possibly see – one of the interesting things is that we ride the wind with the pilots making adjustments but the course is determined by Mother Nature!
  • One of my favorite things about this flight was that we would start early enough that we were able to watch the sun rise during the hot air balloon ride (which disappointingly is not always the case when you take sunrise hot air balloon rides!)

Balloon Inflation

Against the early morning sky, you will watch as your team begins the process of inflating the enormous hot air balloon.

What Experiencing the Sunrise in Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride is Like

One of the most magical moments is watching dozens of balloons float in the half-light.

Flames illuminate the giant canopies, making it a photographer’s dream.

I loved that there were so many other balloons out on this morning as they helped framed my photos.

These sunrise rides are always just really peaceful with the sun slowly rising as you slowly make your way over the landscapes.

Ballooning does not usually affect those people who are scared of heights.

Because the balloon travels with the wind, the basket is very stable and does not sway or rock during flight. There is no sense of vertigo or motion.

Cappadocia’s Geological Formations

Volcanic Origins

Cappadocia’s landscapes were formed by volcanic eruptions from Mount Erciyes, Mount Hasan, and Mount Güllü millions of years ago. Ash and lava created a thick layer of tuff, a soft rock that erosion later shaped into the dramatic forms we see today.

The Famous Fairy Chimneys

One of the region’s defining features is the fairy chimneys—tall, cone-shaped rock structures formed by wind and water erosion.

The pilot can guide the balloon up and down during the flight – notice how sometimes we are so low and flying within a valley that you can see the balloon’s shadow and then gradually soaring magnetically high over the landscapes..

Caves and Carved Architecture

Because tuff is soft, early inhabitants carved homes, churches, monasteries, and entire underground cities into the rock. This distinctive human-made architecture adds to the region’s ethereal beauty.

Landing & Champagne Toast

As if the flight was not already memorable enough, the captain and team were able to guide the balloon and land right on the trailer!

After touchdown, we enjoyed a bubbly toast!

What to Wear & Bring

  • Wear layers as mornings can be chilly but many find the ride to be warm due to the hot air
  • Also wear closed-toe shoes as you will be climbing in and out of the basket.
  • Also wear sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Avoid loose scarves or long dresses.
  • Don’t forget to fully charge your phone and/or camera
  • At most bring a small bag due to space restrictions in the basket
